Eligible applicants shall meet or exceed all of the following: 1) Childhood 7-series vaccination coverage reported on 2016 IIS Annual Report (IISAR) no more than 10 percentage points below the 2016 National Immunization Survey (NIS) Childhood estimate; 2) Td-Tdap coverage estimate reported on 2016 IISAR no more than 10 percentage points below the 2016 NIS-Teen estimate; and 3) At least 95% of vaccine doses administered to persons age 0 to18 years during 2017 (excluding historical doses) submitted to the IIS within 30 days of administration. Eligible applicants shall utilize their entire geographic area and as their Sentinel Site jurisdiction. Agency Code: HHS-CDC-NCIRD Agency Name: Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control - NCIRD Posted Date: Oct 17, 2017 Last Updated Date: Oct 17, 2017 Estimated Synopsis Post Date: Feb 09, 2018 Fiscal Year: 2018 Award Ceiling: $452,500 Award Floor: $300,000 Estimated Total Program Funding: $18,100,000 Expected Number of Awards: 8 Description: In an effort to support the development and improvement of public health capacity of Immunization Information Systems (IIS) and their staff, the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), supported a pilot volunteer group of IIS in 2001 to explore the use of the IIS data to achieve public health goals. Following the success of this pilot, NCIRD formally established the IIS Sentinel Site Project, providing supplemental funding to awardees with high quality IIS data. Six awardees were funded during 2004-2007, eight during 2008-2012, and six during 2013-2017. Data from the IIS Sentinel Site Project have been increasingly used to monitor vaccine coverage, assess uptake of new vaccines, monitor vaccine shortages, assess compliance with national recommendations, and conduct other vaccine-related analyses. Examples of investigations include assessing vaccination coverage of seasonal influenza vaccine, uptake of meningococcal B vaccine, and providing data to inform discussions and recommendations by decision makers, including the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP). IIS have timely population-based provider-verified immunization data. Thus, they can serve as excellent data sources for vaccine studies, particularly when information is needed rapidly to inform public health activities and policy decisions. The high quality, completeness, and timeliness of the IIS Sentinel Sites’ data has positioned this consortium as the primary source of vaccination data during the early phases of a pandemic vaccine response. IIS Sentinel Sites have also made substantial contributions to evaluations of the IIS system functionality and the use of the IIS to support broader immunization program activities. Some examples include the development of analytic methodologies that are specific to IIS data (e.g., use of IIS for vaccine effectiveness studies) and interoperability solutions to address functionality issues between the IIS and EHR to ensure high quality data. Sentinel Site staff have also worked with CDC researchers to provide state perspectives on immunization issues and provided helpful feedback to communities such as the American Immunization Registry Association (AIRA) and workgroups including the Modeling of Immunization Registry Operation Workgroup (MIROW) in determining best practices in the immunization community. ­­­IIS Sentinel Sites have the primary responsibility to report data to CDC to monitor vaccine uptake, timely administration of doses, and vaccination coverage from the populations represented in the jurisdiction. Although the IIS Sentinel Sites are currently able to capture and report a high proportion of pediatric vaccinations, there are significantly fewer administered adult vaccine doses that are captured and reported to the IIS. One of the required components of this funding will be to continue improvements to the completeness, timeliness, and data quality for records of vaccinations administered to adults. Version: 1
